- RDIR Relative DIRectory size $10.00

-
- Command line: RDIR [dirname] or [screenspec]
-
- RDIR '?' or 'h' or 'H' brings up the help screen.
-
- dirname & screenspec are both optional.
- Omit both to examine current directory.
- dirname can be any directory name. Example: B:TEXT.
- See below for a more complete list of types of directory names.
- screenspec (CGA) or (EGA) may be entered on a VGA system
- just to see what it looks like.
-
- For registration information see "REGINFO.TXT".
-
- I wrote RDIR because the DOS command "DIR" provides only
- the size of each _file_ in the current directory. I wanted
- something to show the size of each _subdirectory_. Typically
- on a hard disk, there are several subdirectories, and RDIR
- shows the size of each. This is useful in tracking down what
- is taking up too much room on the disk.
-
- When you type RDIR while at a low level subdirectory, it will
- read and save the information for that level and all below it.
- If you then select its "parent", RDIR reads only the information
- for the parent and its subdirectories, bypassing the subdirectory
- you started from, as it already has that info. Once you have
- reached the top level, you can navigate anywhere on the disk
- without incurring any more disk reads. The advantage of this
- method is that you do not need to wait to read the entire disk
- structure if all you want is to examine one directory.
-
- A pie chart shows the size of each subdirectory, relative to
- the total of all subdirectories at the current level, sorted by size.
- Files at current level are not included in the pie.
- There is a list of these directories to the right, with the
- number of bytes used by the directory, and a percent.
- If percents are less than 1%, it prints a dot.
-
- You can selectively examine each subdirectory shown in the list
- by first highlighting it with the arrow keys, then hit the
- "Enter" key. To access the "Parent" directory, use the up arrow.
-
- SWITCHING DISK DRIVES:
- To examine another Disk Drive, hit the F8 function key.
-
- REMOVING EMPTY DIRECTORIES
- To delete an empty directory, use the Delete key.
-
- If there are more directories than can be displayed in one column,
- a notice appears, typiclally "8 more..". If you want to
- see the names that are off screen, use the arrow keys.
- A bar chart shows the size of the current directory,
- including files at the current level, as a percent of the whole disk.
-
- There is no limit on the number of directories at any level,
- but I have limited the nesting of subdirectories to 16.
-
- RUNNING RFILE:
- The F2 functon key runs the program RFILE, so you can look at the
- filenames in the current directory. Once the RFILE screen appears,
- you can edit the filespec to include only files with the .BAK extension
- for example. You can delete files from the RFILE screen, but RDIR
- will not know about them. Use the Escape key to return to RDIR.
- If you were deleting files with the intent of going back to RDIR
- and removing the now empty directory, use the F3 function key to
- cause RDIR to recalculate the current level.
- If there is insufficient memory to run RFILE from RDIR, a message
- will appear, allowing you to return to RDIR where you left off.
- No error message appears if RFILE cannot be found. It simply returns
- back to RDIR. RFILE must be in the DOS "path".
-
- HELP SCREEN:
- The help screen is reachable with the function key F1 while
- the graphics display is active.
-
- You may be able to print the CGA screen using DOS commands if your
- printer is compatible. Type "GRAPHICS COLOR1" prior to using RDIR,
- then hit shift-PrintScreen while viewing the CGA screen. The DOS
- manual says this is for an "IBM Personal Computer Color Printer",
- but it works fine with my old Epson MX-80.
-
- To exit from the graphic screen, use the "Esc" key or <Alt> X.
-
-
- These are the types of directory names I expect to see typed
- on the command line after "RDIR". Any other variations may produce
- unexpected results. The example assumes you are currently in a directory
- on the C: drive named C:\TOOLS, and the B: drive is at the B:\TEXT dir.
-
- CMD LINE DESCRIPTION EXAMPLE
- (Nothing) Current directory C:\TOOLS
- C: Current directory C:\TOOLS
- C:\ Top level C: C:\
- B: Current B: directory B:\TEXT
- B:\ Top level B: B:\
- C:\TC As typed C:\TC
- GRAPHICS Current dir, GRAPHICS sub C:\TOOLS\GRAPHICS
- B:MISC Current B: dir, MISC sub B:\TEXT\MISC
- C:GRAPHICS Current dir, GRAPHICS sub C:\TOOLS\GRAPHICS
- \TC Current drive, TC dir C:\TC
